| Anaplan Agent Studio is the admin control plane for AI agents. Custom Analyst is a conversational agent configured there for custom planning models. |
TL;DR: Anaplan Agent Studio vs Custom Analyst in Sixty Seconds
You don't choose between Agent Studio and Custom Analyst.
- Agent Studio is where an AI Admin configures and governs Anaplan AI capabilities.
- Custom Analyst is the conversational AI agent configured there for custom Anaplan models.
- CoModeler helps model builders build, extend, optimize and explain models faster.
- Role-based Analysts provide AI analysis for specific Anaplan applications, including Finance, Sales, Supply Chain and Workforce.
So the question for your planning team is which Anaplan AI capability solves your current bottleneck.
If there's an "either-or" question defining Anaplan AI right now, it's this: Agent Studio vs Custom Analyst.
Except, it isn't really a choice between the two. They sit at different layers of the Anaplan AI stack. The question is which capability your planning team actually needs, and why.
That question is becoming more important as enterprise AI is having its "move fast, but get it right" moment. It is expected that 40% of enterprise applications will ship with task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from under 5% in 2025. And at the same time, we also see the other side where more than 40% of agentic AI projects are expected to be cancelled by the end of 2027, driven by escalating costs, unclear business value and inadequate risk controls.
Same 40%. Opposite outcomes. The difference sits almost entirely in how the agent was scoped, governed and deployed, which is precisely the decision in front of Anaplan customers right now.
Anaplan made CoModeler, Custom Analyst and Agent Studio generally available on 25 March 2026, following limited customer availability that began in November 2025. Since then, the most common question in evaluation calls has been some version of: should we start with Agent Studio or Custom Analyst?
It is the wrong question, but for an interesting reason. (For the foundational walkthrough of the control plane itself, see Anaplan Agent Studio, What Is Anaplan Agent Studio? A Practical Guide to AI Agents in Anaplan.)
Agent Studio and Custom Analyst are two halves of one delivery chain: the admin surface and the user surface.
The important question isn't which one to choose, but how each fits into the planning workflow, and where your team actually needs AI assistance. The distinction matters because they address different parts of the AI experience, not because customers need to choose one over the other.
So the real decision is not which product to buy. The real decision is which AI capability to activate first, for whom, and with what guardrails.
Because giving an AI agent more capability does not automatically make it more useful. Gartner's May 2026 research warns that by 2027, 40% of enterprises will demote or decommission autonomous AI agents due to governance gaps that will surface in production. For Anaplan teams, that makes the boundary around an AI capability just as important as the capability itself: what can it see, what can it do, and who controls it?
Agent Studio is the administrative hub where an organisation creates, deploys and manages its Anaplan AI portfolio, including Anaplan Analyst configurations, Custom Analyst and CoModeler.
Concretely, an AI Admin uses Agent Studio to:
- Enable role-based Analyst configurations that ship with Anaplan applications, subject to licensing eligibility.
- Configure Custom Analyst against custom-built models, selecting the exact modules and line items in scope.
- Enable or disable CoModeler at the workspace level, keeping model-building AI within the appropriate workspaces during rollout.
- Add semantic descriptions and starter questions, then review, sync and test the experience before it reaches business users.
The AI Admin role itself is the design decision worth studying. It is a privileged, permission-based role, and the ideal holder is someone who already understands the organisation's Anaplan environment and which models and data should be exposed. The role can sit with an internal CoE, Solution Architect, Workspace Administrator or an appropriately governed implementation partner.
That is a governance choice dressed as a product choice. Anaplan has made the human-in-the-loop a named, accountable role rather than a checkbox, which is particularly important when AI is being introduced into planning workflows.

Custom Analyst is the business-user-facing conversational AI agent for custom Anaplan models. It lets finance, sales, supply chain, workforce and other planning users ask natural-language questions and receive model-grounded insights directly within the Anaplan experience.
The important distinction is that Custom Analyst is not limited to simple "what happened?" queries. Anaplan currently positions it for questions around planning performance, risks, drivers and scenarios, with responses grounded in the organisation's planning logic and business context. It can also generate charts and summaries.
| Query type |
Example |
| Single value |
Revenue for North America in Q3 FY24 |
| Ranking |
Regions with the highest operating costs this year |
| Time series |
Monthly sales for a product line over the last 12 months |
| Performance / drivers |
What is driving the revenue variance in a region? |
| Risk / scenario |
Which planning risks or scenario changes should I investigate? |
The exact questions Custom Analyst can answer depend on the models, modules, line items, semantic descriptions and business context configured by the AI Admin. Anaplan's current product documentation explicitly describes Custom Analyst as enabling users to explore complex custom planning scenarios and ask about performance, risks, drivers and scenarios.
Three technical details separate it from a generic copilot bolted onto a planning stack.
- Data lineage as a default, not a feature. Responses are grounded in planning models and business logic, with data lineage allowing users to validate where an insight came from. That matters when an insight needs to stand up in an operational or executive decision.
- Permission-aware access. Custom Analyst is deployed within the Anaplan experience and access is governed by Anaplan role permissions, so users only see insights relevant to their authorised access.
- Focused model scope. AI Admins select the specific modules and line items the Analyst can query. Anaplan recommends prioritising line items that are most relevant to business users, including key performance drivers, commonly referenced measures and decision-supporting metrics.
For the model-building counterpart to this agent, CoModeler deployments usually sit within the broader Anaplan AI landscape, where CoModeler addresses model-building while Custom Analyst addresses model-based insights.

The easiest way to understand Anaplan's AI portfolio is to start with the business problem rather than the product name.
| If your problem is... |
Look at... |
| We need to build, extend or improve models faster. |
CoModeler |
| Our users need answers from our custom planning models. |
Custom Analyst |
| We use an Anaplan application and want AI-powered analysis for that application. |
Role-based Analysts |
| We need to configure, test, enable and govern these AI capabilities. |
Agent Studio |
CoModeler supports AI-assisted model building, while role-based Analysts serve specific Anaplan applications. Custom Analyst enables tailored analysis of custom models, making these Anaplan AI tools relevant to different planning needs, with Agent Studio providing the central configuration and management environment.
This is why the "Agent Studio vs Custom Analyst" question can be misleading. They solve different layers of the same AI deployment problem.
They work together. Agent Studio is used to build, configure, test and enable Custom Analyst for custom Anaplan models.
The current Anaplan Custom Analyst setup runs in four broad steps:
- Define the Custom Analyst configuration
- Curate approved model data
- Define the experience, then review, sync and test
- Deploy for business users to ask, visualise and act
In practice, those four stages contain several configuration activities: connecting the relevant model, selecting modules and line items, defining business-friendly semantic descriptions, adding starter questions, syncing and testing responses, and then deploying the Analyst to business users.
The most important step is often the data and semantic scope. Rather than exposing an entire model indiscriminately, the AI Admin defines which modules and line items the Analyst can use and gives those elements business-friendly descriptions. Anaplan notes that semantic descriptions help the Analyst determine which data source to use when answering a question.
The recommended starting scope is therefore a focused set of high-value modules and line items, centred on one clear business use case. That keeps the initial experience easier to test, validate and improve.
The technology can be configured quickly, but a production deployment still requires time for data scoping, semantic definition, testing, user enablement and adoption. The first use case should therefore be treated as a governed pilot rather than a simple feature activation.
A feature comparison alone won't help. To get a deeper answer, work through these four questions instead:
Teams running mature Anaplan connected planning estates can therefore sequence adoption around the business constraint: establish the AI governance layer, identify the highest-value use case, pilot the relevant AI capability against a focused scope, and measure whether it improves the speed and quality of decision-making.

Talk to our Anaplan AI team
- Agent Studio is the control plane, not a competing product. It is the central environment for configuring and managing Anaplan's AI capabilities.
- Custom Analyst brings conversational AI to custom Anaplan models. Users can explore planning performance, risks, drivers and scenarios through natural language, with responses grounded in approved planning data and business logic.
- Role-based Analysts and Custom Analyst solve different problems. Pre-built Analysts serve specific Anaplan applications, while Custom Analyst is designed for custom models and use cases.
- CoModeler addresses the model-building side of planning. It helps model builders build, extend, optimize and explain models faster.
- Semantic descriptions and model scope matter. A focused set of high-value modules and line items gives the Analyst the business context it needs to return useful answers.
- Governance starts with the AI Admin. Access, scope, testing and deployment need a clear owner before an AI capability reaches business users.
- Sequencing beats selection. The question is not which Anaplan AI product wins. It is which capability addresses your current bottleneck first.
Anaplan AI capabilities can support different parts of the planning lifecycle, from helping model builders develop and troubleshoot models to giving business users faster access to model-based insights. The potential value depends on how well each capability is matched to a specific planning workflow, rather than simply adding AI to an existing process.
Anaplan Custom Analyst is designed for custom models and use cases. For standard Anaplan applications such as Finance, Sales, Supply Chain or Workforce, teams can use the corresponding role-based Analyst configuration where available. For more context on how Custom Analyst fits within the wider AI stack, see Anaplan Co-Modeler: The AI Agent Built for Smarter Planning.
Yes. An AI Admin uses Anaplan Agent Studio to configure and manage Custom Analyst. This includes defining the relevant models, modules and line items, adding semantic descriptions, testing the configuration and deploying it to users. Agent Studio provides the governance layer while Custom Analyst provides the user-facing conversational experience.
Look for a partner like Polestar Analytics that combines Anaplan implementation expertise with AI, data and planning-process knowledge. The right partner should be able to assess your existing Anaplan environment, identify high-value use cases, establish appropriate governance, configure and test AI capabilities, and support adoption beyond the initial deployment.
